A New Beginning...

Sure we all know about anti-virus and hardware and software firewalls. All fine tools. Beyond that there are secure ways of using WIFI such as WPA not WEP. There are some new and interesting developments in security. If you use Windows then you must read this post.

EEYE have a great design for their security product. It is part firewall, part buffer overrun protection, part antivirus, part heuristic (should you be hitting and IP address in China?) and a lot of Smarts. I'm mean a lot. I'm not easily impressed and this blew me away. I've not seen anything as new and innovate as the EEYE offering. While they have lots of commercial offerings they also do a personal version which is free for basic use. There is also a low cost home option, available here.

While the technical details of its internal workings may be beyond your average user know this. It is the only product you need for security. My day job includes security work for the largest banks in the world (trillions of dollars a day on some systems). If there was ever a product you needed to answer the quesiton "where can I get a fit and forget security solution for Windows I'd say this is it.

Sure you can still improve thinks by

  • Switching from IE to Firefox (or at least turn up the security on IE and disable scripting).
  • If you like eye candy get tab effects ad-in for Firefox
  • Firefox ad-ins like adblock and flashbock will help you reclaim your screen and bandwidth.
